This is the way into the tree business without any experience. You knock doors in neighborhoods where we are already working, find people who need tree work and set them up for an estimate. $40K+ per year to start, and the guys who are good at this move into the Site Supervisor role, which pays $100K+.
You are out in neighborhoods talking to homeowners about their trees. Most people have a tree they have been putting off dealing with, and your job is to find them and get them on the schedule for an estimate. You do not price the work and you do not touch a saw. You find the opportunity and hand it off.
When a crew is on a street, the neighbors are the easiest conversations you will have all day. You are not cold in a random town.
Point at the dead limb over their driveway and ask if anyone has looked at it. That is the whole pitch.
Get the name, the number and a time. The estimator takes it from there.
Which houses, who was interested, who said come back later. The follow-ups turn into jobs.
You will start hearing what work costs and why. That is what moves you toward the supervisor seat.
